NXT is WWE’s developmental brand where future Superstars and established veterans improve on their skills or re-ignite their careers. It has produced some of today’s top stars like Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch and a whole lot more. In fact, majority of the Superstars in the main roster now came from NXT. That’s how far the brand has gone.

Last Saturday morning I got the privilege to watch NXT TakeOver: New York at the WWE Network and it was one of the best and most intense shows I’ve watched.

1NXT Tag Team Championship

The current champ The War Raiders defended their titles against the 2019 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic winners Ricochet and Aleister Black. The champs retained their titles and it seems that Ricochet and Black will now move into the main roster as the tag champs showed their respect for their challengers post-match.

2NXT North American Championship

The Velveteen Dream defeated challenger Matt Riddle. Another intense back and forth match, Riddle had the match won already by applying his Bromission finisher but Dream was able to roll him up for the pin.

Showing his respect, Riddle offered a fist bump in which Dream returned as fans cheered on.

3WWE UK Championship Match

The Bruiserweight Pete Dunne defended his UK Championship against the imposing Ring General WALTER. Both superstars gave an intense fight with Walter giving Dunne the fight of his life with strong chops and intense power moves while Dunne does what he does best and snapped his challengers fingers multiple times.

WALTER then put the champion down finally with a top-rope powerbomb followed by a top-rope splash to secure the victory, ending Dunne’s 600+ day reign to become the new WWE UK Champion.

4Fatal Four Way for the NXT Women’s Championship

Shayna Baszler defended her title against Io Shirai, Bianca Bel-Air and former NXT Women’s Champion Kairi Sane. Another intense back and forth match with awesome moves from all four participants. The closing moments saw Bianca Bel-Air show her power by picking up both Shirai and Sane for a double KOD but the champion came in with a knee to the face and applied the Kirifuda Clutch for the submission victory, retaining the title.

52 Out Of 3 Falls Match: NXT Championship

Johnny Gargano who has earned the right to become the No. 1 contender for the NXT Championship faced Adam Cole for the NXT Championship vacated by an injured Tomasso Ciampa.

The best match of the night simply put – with several near-falls that got the crowd at the edge of their seats. Adam Cole scored the first fall by hitting a sliding knee at the back of Gargano’s head. Gargano scored the second fall by submission. At one point the rest of the Undisputed Era tried to interfere on Adam Cole’s behalf but Gargano fought them off. Cole hits his sliding knee again for the victory but Gargano would have none of it – and the fans went wild with NXT chants.

In the end, Gargano was able to apply his GargaNo Escape submission to Adam Cole, who tried reaching for the ropes but Gargano pulled him back in the center of the ring until Cole finally taps out. Gargano is the new NXT Champion.

After the match, NXT Superstar Candice LeRae joins her husband in celebrating the win, as they approach the stage, they are joined by the former champ Tomasso Ciampa, also his former tag-team partner and fiercest rival.

Wearing a neck brace, Ciampa stands with Candice and Johnny for a group hug as fans cheer them on. “Takeover: New York” goes off the air with Gargano, LeRae and Ciampa standing together on the stage.
